On Sunday March 30th the BEAT hosted the “Unplug and Dive In” event at the Cowichan Athletic Center. The trip was posed as an alternative option to get active rather than be a consumer of energy in our dorms. It is very common for high school aged kids to play video games or use their computers, rather than get physical activity, which is taking a toll on health and energy consumption. The students who participated in the trip spent the afternoon playing in the wave pool, racing down slides, and soaking in the hot tub. The day was a success and ended with a trip to Dairy Queen: it was definitely a fun, worthwhile event. Unplug and Dive In was part of a bigger Brentwood initiative to lower energy consumption. Coming up in April from the 22nd (Earth Day) until May 6th, the BEAT is hosting a competition within the boarding houses to lower energy use: the prize is pizza for the house from Mr. Patel. Some ways to lower consumption in the boarding houses are to cut back computer use, unplug chargers and appliances when they are not in use, turn down thermostats and get outside to play, rather than sit inside and be a consumer of energy. The Brentwood community is always looking for ways to reduce our footprint so the “Pizza on Patel” energy consumption competition within the houses should be a huge success.
