Paul Collis
Instructional Leader, English; Soccer Coach
B.A. (UBC), M.Lit. (St Andrews, UK)

Head of the English Department, and sartorial inspiration for multitudes of Brentwood students, Paul Collis teaches English 9, Language and Composition 11AP, and Writing 12. With an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia, a master’s in Shakespeare from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, no experience as a long snapper for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a lot of experience missing disc golf putts, and a teaching diploma from the University of Victoria, Mr. Collis ensured that he remained in school in perpetuity by joining the Brentwood faculty in 1998. When not brandishing semi-colons to the reluctant or championing Dickens to the incredulous, Mr. Collis coaches soccer at Brentwood, then returns on his bicycle to Cobble Hill, where he, his wife Karen Handford, and their chickens spend many pleasant hours re-enacting great scenes from Pickwick Papers to amuse their corpulent cat.

Soccer
The Brentwood Soccer Program is inclusive, and any player should find opportunity within the year—boys competing in the fall, everyone working on skills development through winter, and girls competing in the spring. Juniors with aptitude and appetite are regularly invited to practice with older players. Our long-term approach to player development focuses on building better thinkers on the field, not just on winning games.

The Soccer Program fields teams at the junior and senior levels. Working as a club, there is cohesion between all groups—as skills and tactics are universal throughout. Travelling to away tournaments on weekend trips is a highlight for many players as they experience the grit of competition and the joy of shared accomplishment.
Our teams participate in several university-hosted tournaments, the BC Independent Schools Association Championship Tournament (ISAs), and they compete in regional and provincial championships. In 2024/25, the Brentwood Senior Boys Soccer team won the Bronze Medal at the Provincial Championship.

Brentwood’s mild climate enables the soccer program to train outdoors year-round. Student-athletes are supported by the facilities located in and around the Eldon and Anne Foote Athletic Centre, including our four grass fields, a turf practice field, and change rooms directly off of Gillespie Field. In addition, our players can further increase their physical abilities by taking advantage of our Strength & Conditioning Centre—where dedicated coaches provide sport-specific training.
