An Ode to Sundays and Sun Days

There is nothing quite like a Sunday at Brentwood – the peaceful tranquility that arises in the knowledge that, yes, rousing yourself out of bed before 9am is a strange thing to do, and, no, there is no obligation to throw yourself onto the water for spring training, or onto the rugby field, or into any sporting venture other than the lazy sport of relaxation. A few months ago I posted a blog at a time when the mornings were still dark, and the sun went down at 5:30pm. Now, as the flowers begin to sprout in Mill Bay, the day are longer, the sun warmer and the atmosphere on campus just a little bit cheerier as the prospects of summer grow nearer and the activities of third term set in. In the mornings, the days are just light enough that the rowers can begin their spring training, working towards the upcoming Brentwood and local regattas, and eventually, the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario. The rugby players are able to practice into the evening, where there’s enough light to practice, but cooler temperatures make playing less arduous. More importantly, however, it means that students and staff alike are now able to experience the springtime beauty of our oceanfront campus. When the temperature on campus hiked up to 18 degrees this Sunday, with not a cloud in the sky, students flocked to the outdoors, taking advantage of leisure time on the field, socializing with friends, wading in the still freezing ocean (unfortunately, though the air temperatures may climb, the water temperature remains much the same) or even a friendly game of tennis in the spring sun. And while a few came crawling back regretting their lack of skin coverage, most were happy for the warmer temperatures, and eventually grateful for the sunscreen provided by the houseparents. This is just the beginning of the spring term, and as the year cools down and the summer heats up, Sundays will surely become more precious as students and teachers look to savor another sunny day.
