Back in March, Brentwood gave back. Not in service or fundraising, but by giving blood. Like other forms of giving, donating blood has a direct and important effect on someone’s life: it literally sustains them through times of illness and injury. Giving blood even trumps organ donation in terms of the number of people helped; each unit of blood can aid up to three people. 33 intrepid members, staff and students alike, of the Brentwood Family turned up for our blood clinic thanks to the tireless efforts and blood sucking persuasiveness of Hye YR, the SPARC member who had the helm on this project. Some simple arithmetic reveals the staggering number of lives touched by our local community: ninety-nine. Ninety-nine people with conditions ranging from premature infants who need surgery, to children being treated for cancer and trauma victims among others were assisted. One in seven people entering a hospital is in need of blood. The scope and importance of how far this blood goes is often underestimated. In ten minutes of giving blood, a donor has affected the lives of up to three people, for the better.
