Early Mornings, Hard Work

Waking up for 8:15 classes is tough huh? Now try waking up at 5:15 and rowing for an hour first. It’s not the ideal way to start our mornings, but the Brentwood Crews are taking every chance they get to improve on the water with CSSRA’s in St. Catharines, Ontario just four weeks away.  When the big races in Ontario are decided by less than a second, it’s important to train as much as possible. Every Brentwood crew goes out on the water at 5:45 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (as well as our regular afternoon practices) and competes against each other in several grueling pieces. The start times are staggered based on the gold medal standard, developed by Mr. Harold Backer. This allows the crews to know exactly how fast they are in comparison with each other and their future competition. At the end of this week, Brentwood will be competing in the Shawnigan Regatta. It will be the last opportunity for our crews to showcase their talent before Nationals. The Brentwood coaches all know the importance of practicing and repetition. Hopefully, with enough hard work, the Brentwood crews can bring home some medals from the CSSRA’s. Jeremy L, Ellis ‘16
