Brentwood’s stunning studios and diverse artistic opportunities have inspired painters, potters, photographers, performers and 3-D artists to explore new media, discover new passions, and continue with old ones. Our students enjoy their arts programs and indulge in Brentwood’s teeming arts resources three afternoons a week. Last Friday, it was time for the Brentwood family to have this same opportunity. On May 2nd, parents had the opportunity to don smocks and grasp clay to take part in Brentwood’s Arts in Action afternoon. Partnered with a student artist, the parents became students for the afternoon learning how, for example, to throw on the pottery wheel, work with charcoal on canvas, or row across beautiful Mill Bay. This was the second successful year for the Arts in Action event and Brentwood plansto offer it again in 2015. Next year, based on all the positive feedback, the school is hoping to give parents a chance to experience the academic side of the school, as well as the arts. This will give them an even fuller taste of the busy and exciting life of a Brentwood student. Whenever parents ask me what it’s like to go to Brentwood, and I reply with enthusiasm about the arts, athletics, and academic tripartite program, the reaction I always get from the parents is wistful. They wish they could have attended Brentwood and experienced the opportunities it has to offer. It is for this reason that I was so eager to watch this event unravel. With my own family participating, I was delighted that they were given the chance to be involved in the school, the way I am every day. It gave my parents and me common ground as we talked later that evening about how Mr. Luna’s way of teaching how to create movement in charcoal renderings from video stills was enormously fascinating, or how rowing really isn’t as easy as the Brentwood crews make it look. The Arts in Action afternoon was yet again a success. Thank you to all of the teachers and staff who organized it, the student artists, and the parents and family members who came out to experience Brentwood’s Arts Afternoon.
