A New Home for Brentwood Hockey

In February, Brentwood’s Hockey Training Centre opened for the first time. “It’s a place for kids who are motivated and want to get better at a specific hockey skill – they now have the facilities to do it” said Mr. Flynn.

The generous benefactor of these resources, whose son was a hockey player and student here at Brentwood, wanted the Hockey Training Centre to be fun and to augment the hockey program. The Centre has three sheets of synthetic ice and a skating treadmill (with a safety harness) that runs up to 40 km/hr. There is a wide variety of opportunities that the Centre provides, including stickhandling and face-off training, goaltender work, and practice in the shooting lane.

As ice time in the community is at a premium, the hockey team has mostly used the Centre on Saturdays when they do not have ice. Next year, however, they hope to make more use of it during the week. Located next door to the Hockey Training Centre is Brentwood’s High Performance Centre, which is run by Mr. Healy. Due to the convenient proximity, hockey players can also work in the High Performance Centre to improve their strength and endurance that can contribute to their success on the ice. Outside of formal training, the Centre is also a fun place where hockey players can spend some free time and work together on improving their game.

Brentwood’s hockey players are not the only ones who have benefited from the creation of the Centre. The facility has also been rented out to hockey teams in the community since it’s opening. The teams that come can also take advantage of the High Performance Centre while working on their hockey technique. Mr. Flynn manages this service.

What do the hockey students think about the new Hockey Training Centre? Well Logan B, Rogers ’13, a four year member of the hockey program, says, “It’s a great addition to Brentwood Hockey and I think it will continue to be beneficial in the future.”

The tennis and squash players have their courts, the rugby and soccer players have their fields, and now the hockey players have their very own training Centre. We hope that the additional training will result in even better results on the ice next year!
