An Evening of Thanks

As the seasons change, and September morphs into October in a haze of brightly coloured leaves and crisp air on one’s lips, it can only mean one thing: Canadian Thanksgiving. The holiday, occurring officially on the second Monday of October, celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year.
On Thursday, October 4th, more than 500 staff and students gathered in Crooks Hall for an early celebration of the cherished festivities that are Thanksgiving. The event marked the first formal affair in the Hall this academic year.
Upon arrival, the aroma of turkey, gravy, and other seasonal delights greeted us. As we took our seats, a pleasant hum was heard all around, each student eagerly anticipating the feast to come. Head Prefect, Andjela S led the blessing before the meal, reminding us all that there is much to be thankful for at Brentwood: the stunning oceanfront campus, coupled with exceptional programs and faculty, are indeed things to be grateful for.
As members of the Student Executive Council (SEC) called them forward, students loaded their plates with an array of foods prepared by the wonderful kitchen staff. After devouring our shares, and more than a few students returning for a second helping, we sat stuffed and content (though admittedly some of our uniforms were feeling a little snug after the meal).
Following the buffet, we migrated to the Bunch Centre to watch a variety of talented students performing an assortment of musical pieces. Some of these included piano, harp and tales from Scott R’s service trip to India this past summer.
It was a lovely evening full of camaraderie, fine dining, entertainment and festivity, and a significant reminder to me that there is an incredibly long list of things in life to be grateful for, none of which should be ignored or overlooked.
To all of you reading this, I hope that you have had a wonderful, safe and happy Thanksgiving. May this week find you in comfort and good spirits.
