Back to the Future

Back to the Future

Welcome back kids! Yes, the time has come to return to our studies, get out of our winter break funk and get back to what we Brentonians do best – work. It’s time to get back to the grind, and I don’t mean French Roast at Rusty’s.

Of course it is an important term for all of us, but no more so than for my fellow Grade 12s. Every minute counts as we continue to strive for the highest possible marks, the highest effort ratings and bug our favorite teachers for letters of recommendation for those annoying, but critical, university applications. After we have done all that we have to do, it is just a matter of playing the waiting game.

However, we are not putting our noses to the grindstone just for academics; we are also back to our vigorous sport training and rehearsals for North America’s first high school production of Les Miserables, so daringly taken on by the indomitable and tireless Mrs. Widenmaier.

Though this may be a year of firsts for many Brentwood students, it’s also a year of lasts for the Grade 12s. Our last Air Band, last Snowball, last Java Hut, last Open House – last year to make it count. But we’re not that old! We still have a few firsts up our sleeves!

It’s our first time being a prefect, first time being on caf duty, first grad dress, first university application (hopefully followed by a first acceptance), and the first time, as almost adults, that we contemplate having to leave so many good friends behind. It’s terrifying and exciting at the same time because this will also be our first foray into university life, the ‘Real World’ and all that it entails.

As One Republic sings:
“New names and numbers that I don’t know,
Address to places like Abby Road,
Day turns to night, night turns to whatever we want
We’re young enough to say
Oh, this is gotta be the good life”
