Battling the Elements at Maple Bay

Long before the sun peaked her head above the horizon last Saturday, the boys’ rowing program was out of bed and getting ready for a long day of racing. The Junior Boys set the standard for the day in the Junior B Eight early in the day, powering off the start line to take a four-length win over Victoria City Rowing Club. The Senior Men’s Lightweight Four, spurred on by the domination of the Junior Boys, also took the win in their exhibition race, with stroke Ellis H, Ellis ’16, setting the rhythm for a solid performance. Then Lion T, Privett ’17, in his second of four races, lunged ahead of the competition in the Junior B Single, taking a well-deserved win. Then joining with Aidan W, Ellis ’17, he raced the Junior Boys Double, coming first ahead of Victoria City Rowing Club by 27 milliseconds. As the water conditions progressed from less than desirable, to horrific, and then on to downright dangerous, the two Senior Boys Doubles and Junior Boys Quad took to the water. The A Double of Alex R Privett ‘16 and Elliot R, Rogers ’15 unfortunately did not finish due to boat breakage, while Louis B, Rogers ’16 & Liam B, Rogers ’16 placed a respectable fourth. The Junior Boys then continued their domination of the regatta, battling against the waves and wind, and placing first in the Junior B Quad by over 10 seconds. Before the Junior Boys Eight and the Senior Boys Eight could face off against each other in the Junior A Eight event, the organizers finally decided that the conditions were simply too dangerous and cancelled the remaining races. Despite the disappointment of being unable to complete the racing, smiles were on the faces of all, as we loaded the trailer and headed back to school.
