Brentwood Boys Claim 2nd on Island: Bags Packed for Provincials

This past weekend the Senior Boys Basketball team competed in the Island Championship at SMUS. In the opening round, Brentwood faced Wellington and struggled on the defensive glass in the first half and were tied 29-29 at the break. In the second half, Brentwood played with more intensity on the defensive end and built a 13 point cushion going into the 4th quarter. We did not look back, advancing with a 73-53 win.

In the semi’s Brentwood faced rival Lambrick Park for the 4th time this season. The talented Lambrick team came out strong while Brentwood’s lack of intensity in the all-important provincial qualifying game was baffling. Lambrick built a 13 point lead late in the third quarter before Brentwood started to play with a little assertiveness. With Martin B shoring up the middle, the team finally managed to get some consistent stops while Shalev S, David L-R and Jon C began to attack Lambrick’s zone with precision. With a little over 2 minutes to go, a Jon C foul line jumper gave Brentwood its first lead of the game. On the next possession a Jordan C drive plus the foul gave Brentwood the cushion it needed and they went on to a 59-50 victory, claiming a berth at the provincial championship.

In the final, Brentwood faced the home team from SMUS. As the game progressed, SMUS was clearly the sharper and more aggressive team on the night. Brentwood struggled to control their penetration and in turn seemed eager to settle for quick and contested shots on the offensive end. A disastrous 2 pt third quarter for our boys gave SMUS an 11 point advantage heading to the final frame. BCS never got much closer and had to settle for a second place finish. The loss has, hopefully, sparked some fire in the boys as they now begin preparing for the provincial championship in Kamloops, March 7 -10. They will open on the Wednesday against the home town Sahali Sabres who will be eager to avenge their loss to Brentwood in last year’s provincial tournament. Good luck to the boys!
