Brentwood Broadcast: Erasing the Distance

Whether it’s families cheering on a student-athlete in an energetic game, parents looking to enjoy a world-class arts performance, or anybody curious about the Brentwood lifestyle, livestreaming brings our global community together. In a boarding environment where families face significant geographical distances, these broadcasts provide a reliable window into the daily achievements of our students.

Ms Backlund, who oversees Brentwood Broadcast, emphasized the significance of livestreaming, explaining that “The importance of streaming school events is immense. When students have been away from home for weeks or even months, I can only imagine how wonderful it must be for parents and siblings to see them score a goal or sing a solo.” Her perspective highlights how Brentwood Broadcast strengthens the connection between students and families separated by long distances.

The true impact of the livestreams are best reflected in the voices of the families that rely on them to stay connected to their children’s lives.

The parents of Ben A, Rogers ‘26 praised the streams: “The ability to see Ben play soccer and basketball makes it much easier to send him all the way to Brentwood because we feel as if we can still support him even though we aren’t there.” They emphasized that the broadcast acts as a bridge for the entire family: “Even his extended family can log on and see Ben play and share those moments, which means the world to us.” This makes it clear how impactful it is for parents who are able to view aspects of students’ lives and accomplishments at Brentwood firsthand. Similarly, Grady N’s dad shared that “The high-quality streams are dependable and feel as if we are able to witness his hard work in real time.”

It’s not just the viewers who value the stream: the students also feel a heightened sense of motivation knowing that their family and friends are watching. Kang C ‘26 explained how his mindset changes when his dad is tuned in: “I am so grateful that my dad can watch my basketball games even though he is so far away. Knowing he’s seeing my progress and cheering me on gives me a massive boost in confidence.” Ben agreed, adding that he “doesn’t feel as nervous” when he has his family supporting him.

Brentwood Broadcast is also unique because it allows students to contribute behind the camera. Ms. Backlund explained, “It is a special aspect of the tripartite program that students can serve as technical support behind the camera for an event one week, and know that their fellow broadcasters are in the booth capturing their moment on the court the next.” This element highlights how broadcasting not only connects Brentwood to the outside world but also strengthens involvement within the school community.

Livestreaming goes beyond film sessions and scorekeeping; it builds a larger community able to follow students from anywhere in the world. Whether it’s the Brentwood Regatta, a rugby game, or a concert in the Killy Theatre, livestreaming ensures every achievement can be appreciated. Thanks to M. Backlund, the IT department, and the Brentwood Broadcast team, the distance between Mill Bay and our global community feels much smaller.
