Brentwood Golf: Who Is The Champion?

A bead of sweat slowly swelters across the player’s brow, as he kneels on the green of the 9th hole. His hawk-like demeanor carefully surveys the rolling surface of the green, his immense concentration remaining unbroken by the chirps of the birds above. He removes his hat, the stark contrast of his bright blue eyes and shining blond hair becoming evermore apparent as he pulls his putter back and swings forward, sending the ball rolling into the hole with a gentle plink. The spectators, however, sigh in impatience, as this entire procedure resulted in the sinking of a one-foot putt. This kind of suspenseful excitement was quite common during the first 9 holes of The Brentwood School Champions Cup, a competition between golfing’s elite to see who comes out on top. Highly favored going into the contest were Austin N, Ellis ’16, and Sam P, Whittal ’17. It was estimated by many that the competition would be fierce between the two, and as demonstrated by the start of this competition, they were correct. These gentlemen are not however, the only Brentwood players on the course. They were joined by many of the other players in the program, some of them there for the purpose of competing and others purely to develop their knowledge of the sport. Ranging from Julie W, Alex ‘15, to Thomas B, Ellis ‘18, these other competitors create a wide spectrum of scores, yet all attitudes seem to center around having a good time. There have also been some PGA-worthy shots, with Aidan M, Alex ‘18 sinking an exceptional chip to finish the first hole in three shots, the tournament’s first birdie. Regardless of the score, the participants have the opportunity to learn and improve, or, at the very least, enjoy the beautiful weather. While some of the competitors dig divots like excavator holes, the rest of the golf team practices on the driving range, many aspiring to be in the competition next year. Helping them along, as always, are Mr. Garvey and Mr. Robinson, straightening out both swings and attitudes as the students practice on the range. Although the competition has just started, it is already in full swing, with both competitors and the coaches reaping the rewards, and although there are some strong favorites, there’s no saying who will rise to the top.
