Cake Race Revelries

On Monday’s cold, blustery afternoon the rowers gathered in their teams to prepare for the annual Cake Race. A week before the event, teams and team captains had been selected by the coaches and they decided on a theme to dress up as. After getting only one practive row together, each group lines up on the water in their randomly selected boats, which the team captains had chosen by picking out of a hat. This year the costumes ranged from pyjamas and onesies to construction workers and reindeer, complete with Christmas sweaters. The boats were decorated to match the costumes of the rowers – the Mexican Fiesta’s cox even carried a piñata along with her and the Canadian group waved the Maple Leaf. After the race, everyone waited in the erg room to hear the winners announced. This year, the tight and bright group, the pyjama group and the construction worker group won gift certificates for Rusty’s for best costumes, and the boat dressed in the colours of several different countries won for first place in the race. After the prizes had been given by the Head of School, Mr. Patel, the coaches invited everyone to have a cupcake to celebrate before Christmas Break. Cecilia B, Allard ‘15
