Climbing to New Heights
On two separate Red Saturdays a group of brave Brentwood students boarded a bus at 7:30am destined for a day of outdoor climbing. Upon arriving at Sunny Side Cliffs, each of us took our backpack and a rope and made for the edge, looking down an intimidating precipice. Helmets were tightened, harnesses were doubled back and ropes were secured. Then, as a whole, the group made its way to the bottom of the cliffs.
Looking up to where we had just been, it seemed we were all taking the hard road. Many might ask why anyone would choose to scale a vertical wall using holds the size of toonies as opposed to simply walking up a comparatively flat path for five minutes. The answer is simple, so many of us have been hooked by the challenge of using our minds and muscles to achieve a goal: the feeling of conquering a climb keeps bringing us back.
Quickly, all 5 ropes were used with a student climbing and another belaying the safety rope, simultaneously filling the role of encourager and supplier of possible moves in times of difficulty. Our guide, Sebastian, as well as Mr. Norman and Ms. Marchand, not only got a chance to climb and rappel along with us, but also circulated, giving pointers and encouragement.
For some, it was the first time climbing outdoors and the challenge was met admirably with each student making it to the top of one, and often several, climbs. Then we all took a break for lunch on top of the cliff. Hot soup and sandwiches were made and all of us were given the chance to appreciate the roaring river below and the beauty of the landscape. “My heart leaps up when I behold”. Despite a little west coast dew, the ODP rock climbers had a grand time and many achieved new levels of ascent. See you at the rock face!
