“Cold and Rain is Your Reality”

Mill Bay does not show up on weathernetwork.com, or on weatheroffice.gc.ca. At this time of the year we’re stuck in the land of half frost and half rain where snow seldom exists and the sun goes away for a while. May and June are pretty nice, so are July, August, and September, but the sunny weather doesn’t always stick around…pack your down jackets, raincoats and rubber boots, for as Mr. Patel oh so kindly stated in regards to the next couple of months “Cold and rain is your reality.”

Brentwood is kind of like a puppy. Term one is all new and exciting and you can’t get over how fun and awesome it is to have a new pet. You make new friends, and get coffee 5 times a week, thrilled by the simple idea that everything is so new. Term 3 is the time when you’ve found a happy place with yourself and your puppy and the sun is shining and you’re no longer ‘the new kid.’

But they called it the terrible twos for a reason. Term two is cold, it’s raining and you just don’t want to go out in that dreadful weather. You’re calling your mom desperately seeking a package with those rainboots that you so slyly forgot to pack and wondering why you didn’t choose a school in Hawaii.

DO NOT FRET, I repeat, do not worry. Term two is like that frozen Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream that is next to impossible to unfasten. But let it sit for a couple of minutes and you’ll discover the wonders and surprises, the chocolate bits and fudge swirls of term two.

For those coming from the tropics, snow is definitely not something one sees everyday. Term two offers a ski trip to beautiful Mount Washington every single Sunday which is an absolute blast. Even better is the school ski trip on January 30th, and, yes, ladies and gentlemen, you get to miss school! Showcase Basketball and Showcase Hockey are also highlights, as we’ll get to watch our Brentwood teams take on (and hopefully beat!) our Shawnigan rivals. The Commendee outing to Victoria is this weekend and Midterm Break is less than a fortnight away!

After midterm there are rowing regattas, more basketball and hockey, dances, open houses, winter camping for Outdoor Pursuits and the musical, “In the Heights.” During the March Break there is a rugby trip to France and before you know it, we’re basking in the spring sunshine.

In the meantime, a London Fog from Rusty’s will always warm your heart and trips up the beach are always relaxing. And so you see, my fellow Brentonians, staff and parents, term two really isn’t that bad. It’s pretty great actually! You just have to wait for it to defrost a little.
