Cross Country Shines at Island Championships

On Tuesday, the BCS cross country team endured frigid weather and sore muscles to earn impressive standings in the Vancouver Island Age Group Championships at Beaver Lake, Victoria. Cheered on by coaches Mrs. Rebecca Reynolds and Mr. Rob Rose, nineteen runners from Brentwood’s (arguably) most dedicated team battled it out against tough competition from infamous Oak Bay and three other high schools from across the Island.
Of the five schools attending, the Senior Girls team placed second in their age group. Each race had between forty and fifty competitors, of which Morgan W finished 7th in the junior girls, Renee L finished 14th in the senior girls’, and Kaali A finished 15th in the Senior Boys’ division. The boys ran 6.1 km while both girls’ divisions ran 4.1 km.
The rugged and undulating path to success had its challenges; our route had enough ups and downs to cause our steely hearts to falter, if only for mere moments. More than one voice complained of the cold, and I experienced crippling nausea for the last hundred metres. Nevertheless, we pulled through our misapprehensions and dry heaves to finish with typical flair. Spirits were high on the return trip as the incumbent heroes retired home, satisfied with their accomplishments.
