Development Field Hockey 1

The Development Field Hockey Team was comprised mainly of girls who had never played the sport before, but if you were to watch them play by season’s end, you would never have known that they were a beginner group of players. Over the course of the term all of the girls worked very hard to improve their basic skills: passing, receiving, hitting and dribbling with their head up. In addition, they learned proper positioning on the field, the correct way to mark a check, how to attack their opponent’s net as a team, and how to both defend and attack short corners. Needless to say, there was a lot to learn, but the girls were always up to the challenge. Throughout the season the squad played many matches against Shawnigan Lake School, Mark Isfeld Secondary, and St. Michaels University School. During these games the girls demonstrated great determination and grit and always played with a never-give-up attitude. These games gave the squad the opportunity to show their ability to work together as a team and also allowed them to put into action what they had learned during the training sessions. The girls showed that they were able to not only move the ball up the field as a collective unit, but that they could also work together to defend the other team when they got near our net. The team participated in one tournament in Courtenay. Although they did not manage to win a game at this tournament, they gained great game experience. It should also be noted that all of their matches were against senior squads that had more experience playing the game. As the coaches of this team, we would like to thank the girls for their effort and enthusiasm throughout the season. We are very proud of the improvement they showed since their first practice and are confident that many of them have the potential to play on a Junior A or Senior A team in the future. We hope to see all of the girls out on the field hockey pitch again in the future! Mrs. Warner & Mrs. Jackson
