Dr. Dyer Delivers

All the way from London, England, Dr. Gwynne Dyer spoke at Brentwood on Monday. A historian turned journalist, his articles have been published in 175 papers in 45 countries. He has also published books on Canadian and international history. His lecture presented a thesis that the Great War and Second World War were actually the 6th and 7th world wars, as European nations have competed for power about every 50 years over the past three centuries.  He talked about how we may have “taken a vacation from history” in the past 70 years, that we may have broken this cycle of violence (knock on wood). He also took questions about current events happening in the Ukraine and Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan because of Canada’s involvement in WWI and WWII.  His points were very interesting as they brought light onto what may be swept under the historical rug, and how events that happened in the past greatly influence our present and, quite possibly, the future.
