Dueling at Elk Lake

Dueling at Elk Lake

The Junior Boys rowing team took 6 crews to the Dueling Over a Grand Regatta at Elk Lake this past weekend. With the weather ranging from a frigid, windy, snow-scattered Saturday to a few balmy and bright sunny periods on Sunday, the entire Junior Boys squad performed incredibly well. Competing in a field of 16 crews in their event, they placed 5 of their 6 quads in the top 8.

The Senior Girls raced two quads and a double. All boats improved on their race speed over the course of the regatta and also learned some valuable race preparation lessons. Our two quads placed 3rd and tied for 4th. The double had an excellent second race, but were pitted against a much bigger and stronger club crew from Vic City.

Given that the regatta fell on the weekend after our return from a three week Spring Break, and none of our crews had any practice in their racing shells before the event, or, in the case of the junior boys, any significant experience with sculling, it was a remarkable performance by a very strong squad of rowers. The 2-boat elimination-style format of the event is a wonderful way for crews to have great racing and learning experiences which they will use to improve the rest of their races this season.
