Education and Reconciliation: Indigenous Studies 12

British Columbia has always been a leader when it comes Indigenous reconciliation. While there are over 50 First Nations on Vancouver Island, they are organized into three different tribal regions: the Kwakwaka’wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish. Brentwood has engaged in multiple acts of reconciliation and education with Indigenous peoples, the newest being the implementation of a new graduation requirement.

This year, Indigenous Studies is placed into every student’s Grade 12 Social Studies course. It focuses on Brentwood’s core values of diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation by helping students better understand the history, identities, worldviews, and culture of Indigenous peoples. Chris S, Whittall ‘24, shares his benefit from the course: “[Indigenous Studies 12] ensures that all Brentwood students – especially those that aren’t from this country – can learn a key component of both the past and future of what we now call Canada”.

This year, Mrs Amiel has elected to teach the course. When asked about her passion for Indigenous studies, she explained: “It’s a way for me to connect with the community beyond the Brentwood gates. I’ve been able to attend many different events and sit in conversations which grant me an opportunity to honor my commitment to both reconciliation and education.”

British Columbia has been making similar strides as Brentwood and other independent schools in the province. Starting for those graduating in the class of 2024, a course similar to Brentwood’s Indigenous Studies 12 will be mandatory to graduate with a Dogwood Diploma. “It’s nice to see another step in the right direction for Canada,” said Hazel L, Allard ‘23. “Although I wouldn’t have chosen this class, I’m definitely happy I got the opportunity to develop my empathy and understanding of Indigenous peoples.”

Next year, Brentwood is planning to take it a step further by changing Indigenous Studies from a term-long piloted course to a regular, three term course. Along with the other acts of reconciliation Brentwood has participated in, including the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, as well as Indigenous Studies in English 10 and 12 next year, our community continues to honor and improve its commitment towards Indigenous Peoples.
