The pursuit of perfection is notably present on the Brentwood First 15 rugby team and this past weekend, the Brentwood boys set out for Abbotsford aspiring to attain the title of provincial champions. Sweat and hard work earned the team a position in the AA provincial championship finals, which, no doubt, would be the pinnacle of their high school athletic careers. To watch the spirited spectacle, a group of 30 Brentwood students spent eight hours of their Red Saturday to travel to Abbotsford, hoping that their signs, cheering, and support would aid the boys in capturing the title, and bringing home the banner.

The bus loaded at 9:15 AM. Supporters clad in red and black slid into seats next to the vibrant signs for their friends and players. In admiration of the boys’ dedication to the game, the fans spent the majority of their day on either a ferry or a bus. However, once the bus unloaded in Abbotsford just in time for the 2:30 final, the fan base made itself noticed with cries of “GO BCS!” ringing throughout the stands.

The game was clearly the final, as right from the start it was apparent that Brentwood and Collingwood were well matched teams. With three tries being scored on each side, a heart-breaking breakaway for Collingwood near the end of the game gave them the lead they needed to secure the championship. Devastated, Brentwood’s players and the fans boarded their respective busses.

The amazing accomplishment of second place, however, was not overlooked. Yes, eight hours of travel was dedicated to watch a game with an outcome that may not have been pleasing, but to see the passion for the game present in the team was worth the trip. It is only hoped that in return, the screams and cheers of the 30-some students was enough to show the boys that their efforts and accomplishments had not gone unnoticed by their peers, housemates, friends, the Brentwood family.
