Fiddler on the Roof: Brentwood’s Musical
With the end of Winter Term rapidly approaching, it is the time of year that the cast and crew of the Brentwood musical have been waiting for, and preparing for, since the beginning of the year – Fiddler on the Roof. The iconic musical follows the story of a small Jewish village in pre-revolutionary Russia in 1905, where each day is a struggle with poverty and the tough rule of the resident Russian Constable (Mr. Rick Rodrigues) and his men which is likened to “a fiddler on the roof” – constantly swinging in and out of balance. A poor, introspective milkman, Tevye (Liam L), accompanied by his wife Golde (Kira C), must deal with the antics of their five daughters, struggling with their beliefs as they defy tradition in favour of following their hearts. In this close-knit community, there are other character s to help or hinder Tevye in his journey – Yente (Jocelyn K), the exuberant matchmaker, the treasured Rabbi (Trenton G) and his son (Will K), Lazaar Wolfe (David C) the butcher, and many others. Alongside the principal character is the chorus, who, as village peasants, provide a backdrop to Tevye’s struggles. The set, featuring the important Jewish symbols of the sun and the moon, has been built and designed over many months, and is sure to impress. Behind the scenes, Brentwood’s Theatre Production crew, lead by Mr. Armitage, have been preparing the intricate scene changes, lighting and sound queues that make sure that everything runs smoothly. After almost a full week of rehearsals with the Victoria based orchestra, where both students and teachers have sacrificed their precious ‘prep’ time to don 20th century peasant garb, the show has its third of five performances this evening. Tickets are still available through the T. Gil Bunch Theatre website if there are any last minute desires to see this fantastic production. Thank you to Mrs. Widenmaier, Mrs. Blake, Mr. Newns and Mr. Armitage for making sure the show runs smoothly and guiding the cast through the lengthy process of producing such a fantastic show. We hope to see you out there. L’Chaim! Joanna L, Alex ‘14
