From Ivy Leaves to Ivy Leagues?
The students of AP Biology must learn the skills involved in designing their own experiment. This term, given the prompt "Investigate the factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis" each group developed a methodology for tackling the problem. The ivy leaves from the Ross Academic Building provided the raw material for the investigation. Some groups looked at varying light levels and designed a light meter using programmable ‘arduino’ equipment while all students gained an insight into the process of formulating and testing a hypothesis, the essence of the scientific method. Whichever post-secondary institution the students find themselves in next year, critical thinking and creative problem solving will be essential to their success. We hope some of these took root here at Brentwood. Mr. David McCarthy?
