Girl 7s Win Island Gold
Last Friday the Women’s High School Island 7s Rugby Championships were played at Brentwood, with the top five teams earning a spot in the provincials. Our first game was against the newly-developed Oak Bay Barbs, who came out feisty. Brentwood’s talent and skill outmatched Oak Bay and the game was won by a hefty sum of tries awarded to speedsters such as Denise R and Cate B. We played our second game versus the veteran and extremely powerful GP Vanier. We had prepared for a day of hard-earned games and came on to the field with one purpose: to win. The game was tough because Vanier has large and aggressive forwards who are talented at the breakdown. We quickly adjusted and came back at Vanier with our strength, which is speed, and shut them down with our equally experienced and talented players. Our third game of the day was against Cowichan whose skilled forwards, matched by a strong back-line, punctured the gaps on the outside of our backline to advance their score by one try over us at the end of the game. Our fourth game was against Belmont, whose team is relatively new, so many of the rookie Brentwood girls such as Coco U and Delaney M got a lot of playing time to adjust to 7s rugby. We won the game by a significant difference and therefore advanced to the finals versus Vanier, once again. We played sideline to sideline rugby, sending the offensive ball across the whole team, awaiting a gap to arrive to send our quick players through, and surely they did. We sent Denise R and Hannah C around most of the Vanier team to score epic tries, and Ciel AB and Brooklyn N up through the gaps created at centre-field. We racked up a large amount of points early on in the game whilst keeping up a strong defence. In the second half we began to let up our defence and allowed Vanier’s backline to capitalize on gaps between defence. The game finished with a score of 26-24 for us. We won by a single conversion made by our driven, hard-working and skilled kickers, Avi S and Mckenna H. With our first place finish we advance to provincials at University of Victoria and Westhills Stadium this Friday and Saturday, April 17th-18th, where we hope to entwine our unity and grit into each game.
