Grade 8 Destination Imagination

The last weekend of February was especially exciting for the Grade 8s. We gathered outside the bus just after lunch on Friday with our strange collection of luggage: duffel bags, keyboards, guitars, and many creative masterpieces. The long-awaited ferry ride finally approached at three o’clock; the trip had officially begun. After a delicious dinner and a comedic, action-packed film, the class arrived at the hotel where we seperated into our rooms and attempted to fall asleep while containing the excitement for the next day. The next morning, twenty six tired teenagers boarded the bus and anxiously awaited the beginning of the competition. As the bus drove up beside St. George’s School, sunlight was flooding through the trees that surrounded the castle-like building. Carrying our team flags, we paraded into a gym packed with many enthusiastic groups of students. After a brief speech, the competition started! First up was the two-person structural team challenges for Team Vortex and The Squad. Despite using the wrong measurements, Brentwood used teamwork and carried through with their difficult task. We still enjoyed each other’s company and embraced the opportunity as a chance to learn. The two improv teams were very excited to start their challenges. First up was the Coco Squad which performed to the best of their abilities and had a lot of fun while completing their task. Some people broke out of their shells, even when feeling nervous at the beginning and some didn’t appear nervous at all! The second improv group, The Breensicles, had a confident, smooth performance: the teams did very well. After a long day of performing and logical, creative thinking, the Grade 8 Destination Imagination groups boarded the bus to head back home to the Island. Our amazing teacher Mrs. Patel thanked us by giving us a thoughtful gift, that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The Grade 8 class returned to Brentwood on Saturday night, feeling tired but happy with the success of the teamwork they displayed in Vancouver. We are so thankful that we had this opportunity, as we learned a lot and created many new memories! Jemma O & Jenna W ’19
