Head of Shawnigan Lake Regatta

Head of Shawnigan Lake Regatta

20 February 2013Mrs. Debbie Sage and Mr. Brian Carr, Coaches

The Rowing Club packed up the boat house and traveled to Shawnigan Lake for a weekend of racing, the first regatta of 2013 with the whole club. We had 85 athletes prepared to row both days. On the Saturday it was the annual Hungerford Regatta in which the novice crews race over a "skills course", while the rest of the experienced crews race over 1000 meters.

Congratulations to the Junior A Novice Women’s 8+ as they were the only crew that managed to complete the Skills Course before Mother Nature canceled the rest of the events for the day due to high winds and waves.

Sunday brought sunny skies and flat water and great race results as the experienced crews competed over a distance of 6.5km and the novices tackled 2.5km. The results from the Head of Shawnigan Lake Regatta are as follows:
1st
Junior A Men’s 4X+
Open Novice Men’s 8+
Junior A Novice Women’s 8+
Junior A Men’s 8+

The Brentwood Varsity Boys 8+ was mistakenly registered in the Open Men’s 8+, not the Jr. A category. We did not find this out until after the results were posted. There were concerns from the UVIC coaches that the original times were wrong. The original times posted had the UVIC JV’s beating their Varsity. Upon review, the regatta committee published new results for the Open Men’s 8+:

1.UVIC Varsity 20:01.2
2 UVIC JV 20:29.38
3 BCS 20:53.38
4 UVIC Frosh 21:17.51

Congrats to the Senior Boys on a fantastic finish! The time of 20:53 would have won the Jr. A division by a minute and 47 seconds.

2nd
Junior B Novice Women’s 4X+

3rd
Junior B Men’s 8+
Junior A Men’s 4X-
Junior A Men’s 2X
Open Novice Men’s 8+
Open Novice Men’s 4X+

This was the first event for the whole rowing club; we are now preparing for the Elk Lake Spring Regatta in two weeks. This is the start of the racing season for the rowing club and we look forward to many positive results from the 120 athletes in the rowing club.
