This past weekend the Brentwood Junior A Boys Basketball team journeyed to Victoria to play in the Spectrum Tip-Off Tournament, spanning Friday and Saturday. Aside from a scrimmage against Belmont, this was the first time the boys would take the court against an opponent. Brentwood entered the tournament as the reigning champions, but knew that they had different personnel this year. Regardless, they were excited to get their first court action of the season.  The boys faced off against a team from Vanier Secondary School in their first game. Rather than playing nervous and starting out slow, the team rocketed to an early lead and never looked back, coming away with a 72-29 victory. The team got strong play from #3 Brendan S who recorded 24 points including four 3-pointers and #8 Bruno C who had 13 points, 6 assists, and 7 steals. Due to the large margin, newcomers #14 Riley T #7 Alula H, #5 Johnny K, #11 Will N, and #15 Calvin C got lots of playing time, which helped them adjust to the team’s play.  Next, Brentwood played Reynolds Secondary School. Once again, the team jumped out to a big lead and kept up the pace, regardless of who was in the game. They ended up winning 69-37. The team was led by career highs from Bruno C (17 points) and Johnny M, who was limited in play last year due to a concussion, scoring 14 points. #10 Olamide O had a solid game with 12 points and 8 rebounds. #13 Casper P played stellar defense and finished the game with a team-high 10 rebounds. Calvin continued his strong bench play and had 6 points off of two 3-pointers. After the game, the team went to get some food at a nearby mall, providing a great opportunity to build team chemistry.  On Saturday morning, the team was matched up against Semiahmoo Secondary School. Last year at this same tournament, Brentwood had faced Semiahmoo in the semifinals, coming away with a narrow 58-56 victory. Facing a familiar foe, the team competed hard the entire way and won the game 83-32. The game featured a very well balanced performance from the team, with 6 players scoring in double figures, including Riley T, finishing with 11 points off the bench. Brendan S lead the team in scoring with 18 points and Casper P had a monster game, having 16 points and career high 15 rebounds, receiving the first double-double of the season.  With three victories, Brentwood was in the finals of the tournament and was squared up to face a team from St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. The game was very hard fought in the first half, as the score was 35-29 for Brentwood at the break. After coach Sullivan explained what needed to improve during the respite, the team came out firing on all cylinders, leaving STA in the dust. The final score was 74-50 and again Brentwood was winner of the Spectrum Tip-Off Tournament. The team was led by career highs by Brendan S (28 points) and Johnny M (18 points). Olamide O had a great game, finishing with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. The bench played amazing defense and gave the team a large boost when they were in the game.  The Juniors look to continue their win streak with a home game against Shawnigan on Tuesday at 3:30. The team is very excited for the rest of the season and hope to have similar success.  Olamide O, Privett ‘18
