Junior B Volleyball 1

The team consisted of Grade 9s and 10s all of whom were new to the school. Once the confusion of having two Emmas, two Hannahs, and one set of identical twins named Emma & Hannah was sorted out, the team was able to improve its individual skills and team play. We open our season in Victoria with matches against SMUS B. We won a couple of sets and were able to practice our serve receive and begin to develop a feel for transitions. The Bs then participated in three tournaments. The first was the ISAs. Although we did not win any matches, it proved to be a pivotal point in our season as the girls learned to face adversity and to measure their performance on the quality of their play and not simply the score. At the second tournament the girls ran into their season-long nemesis, the SLS Junior A team, and though we scored 16 & 17 points against them, we were unable to push through and make a final run. We did defeat DCS in round robin play to place 4th and Hannah Marof was named a tournament All-Star. In the final tournament at home, the girls played some of their best volleyball to conclude the season, despite some injuries to key players, and finished 2nd. Beyond wins and losses, the team bonded immediately and in a way that allowed each member to find her role and to feel included. Our libero and Captain, Kennedy Miller, helped to guide her team through the nuances of the game. Aleah Grymaloski set for us right from day one and her poise was a beacon of calm for the team through its ups and downs. I hope that each member of the team enjoyed playing as much as I enjoyed coaching. Several players have chosen to continue to improve their skills in preparation for next season by participating in term two club volleyball. Whether they remain in junior or graduate to the seniors, I encourage all to continue to play volleyball next year and hope that I will have the opportunity to work with them again.
