Junior Boys Cap off Historic Season

Rarely in our history have we seen a Jr Boys team with the potential that this group of young men did. There were skilled guards, dynamic forwards, and a man in the middle who not only struck fear in the hearts of opponents, but also made women swoon with his thick German accent. At many stages along the way, we had tournament success. A 1st place finish at the Victoria Tip Off, 2nd at the ISAs and 2nd at Mark Isfeld let our boys know that when they played their best, they could contend with the Island’s best. A test of our competitive nature would come when we hosted the Islands. Needing to finish in the top four to qualify, our boys prepared well and did not blink when faced with the adversity of a first round loss to NDSS. Indeed, they refocused and dispatched Wellington before facing the biggest test of their season, a game against Oak Bay. The game and our season would come down to Casper P at the free throw line with 0.5 seconds on the clock and Brentwood down by 1 point. Never scared of the moment, Casper demonstrated the essence of mental toughness when he made both foul shots to give us the victory and assure our presence in the provincials. Elation ensued. At the prestigious 32 team provincial championship, after a disappointing loss to MEI, our boys rattled off three consecutive victories against quality opponents to set themselves up against New Westminster for 10th. Although the boys battled hard and were tied with 1 minute left on the clock, victory slipped from our grasp and we were left with a 3-2 record and the highest placing for an Island team. Ferdinand S played his best basketball of the year and was rewarded with a third team all-star award. This team will have a place in Brentwood lore for their success on the court, but also for their ability to set a standard for success that hopefully will become the norm as our basketball program continues to evolve.
