Junior Girls Basketball 1
It was an exciting roller coaster that ended with significant success! Not normally a pillar of Brentwood athletics, this year’s team changed that paradigm. Equipped with athleticism and desire, we began with spirited games against Queen of Angels and Dwight – both of which went extremely well and ended in lopsided wins. After the December break the team played in the Island Challenge Tournament and followed that up with the ISAs. We struggled to regain our early magic but we managed to gut out some wins against some tough teams. We knew that there was work to do and we used practice time to prepare team strategies and build skills for the Mid Islands. This championship was our focus. Our first test was against the home team, Cowichan, in their barn. We raced out to a quick lead and dominated play at both ends of the floor. Our defense was rock-solid and we managed to score at will. The result was never in doubt and we were on our way to the final. Perhaps more impressive, if that is possible, was our start against Kelsey. We roared out to a dominant 17-2 lead after the first quarter and there was no looking back. The victory and the championship belonged to Brentwood. Our courageous team was then off to Nanaimo to compete in the Islands. Unfortunately, during the warm-up in our first game, our Captain, Emma F rolled her ankle and was unable to play the rest of the weekend. While that could have been crippling, the girls played extremely well and lost a close game to Kwalicum 40-43. The last match of the season pitted us against a scrappy team from Port Alberni. The score went back and forth all game and looked set for overtime with the score tied at 40 with 7 seconds to go. A quick inbounds pass followed by a ball reversal to the weak side resulted in a wide-open 12 foot jumper for Nancy M. With two seconds on the clock, she made no mistake and the game was ours. Overall, it was a terrific season and the girls should be very proud of their efforts. The rebounding we had from Dana C & Caitlin C, the low post work from Alex T, Deborah C & Emma F, shooting from Flavie B-J & Nancy M, defensive structure from Megan A & Aidan M and ball handling from Maya J, Sarah R & our general-on-the-court, Zjaya D all led our team. With this group of girls firmly established, the future of Brentwood Girls Basketball looks solid. Mr. Neil Robinson, Coach
