Make Em Laugh

The idea for a Comedy Fest came to me when I saw my acting class play scenes from Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and Monty Python’s “Holy Grail”. Their collective clowning and sense of humor made sketch comedy a perfect choice for their spring term project.

The class searched the internet for vintage and current skits from television. Scenes from Saturday Night Live, College Humour, Mad TV, Key & Peele, Mr. Bean, and Abbott & Costello were read in class. We selected the funniest skits, cast the show, and began rehearsing, but after three weeks of work we needed an audience to confirm our choices. On Friday afternoon, one hundred Fine Arts students spilled into the Drama Room; the actors were nervous but ready. The stage was set: Braddock and Keaton brought the sound and lights up and the show began.

From the opening act, “Who’s on First?” to the final SNL parody of Adele’s song “Someone Like You”, the audience didn’t stop laughing. This was a terrific opportunity for the younger players to get some experience in front of an audience. Some notable performances were brought in by Tyler, Bilal, Kevin, Kabir, Pippa and Joe. Our MC’s, Jason and Tom, kept the show moving and Tyler and Reid did double duty as stage hands. A good time was had by all.
