Mexican Rugby in Colombia
La Guajira, Riohacha in Colombia was the hub for the South American U18 Rugby Tournament this summer from August 23-29th which featured teams from Peru, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico. Brentonian Santiago G, Privett ‘17 was one of the representatives, and starting flyhalf, for team Mexico which qualified for this tournament roughly a month before by winning the North American B tournament. After a week of training in Mexico City, the team traveled to Colombia and got off to a great start in their first game vs. Peru as they earned a 61-0 win putting them in first place going into the finals a week later against Colombia. After a great fight between the two finalist countries, where both teams left their hearts on the field for themselves and their countries, Colombia managed a 23-19 win making them the Cup winners. Mexico, however, shows a very promising future with a fast-developing team. This tour gave Santiago and his team a unique and rich experience that can be only experienced in a country full of culture such as Colombia.
