On Thursday, some Brentwood students were talking to one of the pioneers of nanotechnology, Carlo Montemagno. The Edmonton-based professor who runs a team of 42 researchers explained to our young scientists how nanotechnology was potentially able to make a significant impact on a variety of fronts from cancer detection to water purification. The recent recipient of the prestigious Feynman Prize for contributions in the field, Dr. Montemagno is excited about scaling up projects such as artificial photosynthesis that can create biofuel with high efficiency while at the same time removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Students in this small group setting were able to ask their questions in an more relaxed way than in a big lecture hall.
