The Brentwood Vocal Jazz Choir, experiencing their first performance last week, went to a summit, at the West Coast Music Festival in Nanaimo. No pain, no gain. We woke up at 5:30 and running to the bus before 6:30 was the biggest challenge for the singers: who wants to sing when she’s not even awake? After quickly having breakfast on the bus, the crew began their early morning rehearsal led by our captain, Jaclyn C, Alex ‘16. We arrived at the performing center 30 minutes early; we all felt excited as well as nervous being the first performers of the day. Would the adjudicator like us? Would we mess up? The adjudicator we had last week was a cool guy, and he really liked us even though we didn’t do our best. Will this time be different? Getting on stage not feeling fully prepared, we began our journey with the goal of going to Nationals next year. Our only audience was the Brentwood Jazz Band, which made us even more nervous. With a good start by our two lovely soloists, the singers were then all in a great mood to present our songs. We ended up with “Bumble Bee” in the right pitch. Then there came the most nerve-wracking part: waiting for the result. With more than an hour of anxiously waiting and wandering around, we were all about to scream when Mr. Newns told us that the Brentwood Vocal Jazz got GOLD with the incredibly high ranking of 80%. You only need 63% to receive gold; you only need 75% to be in the University Music Ensemble. The incomparable Brentwood Vocal Jazz crew is going to Nationals in Ottawa next year. Go singers go!
