Novice Debaters Soar At UVic
After a break of two months, Brentwood’s Debate program is back in full swing, with tournaments and competitions approaching from left, right, and centre. Despite the rustiness of the returning debater’s skills and the greenness of the newcomers, it seems 2015/16 will be another highly successful year for BCS debate. On September 26th (this past Sunday, for all those keeping track) the Novice Debate Tournament took place; a group of eighty plus debaters and judges ranging from Grades 8 to 12 travelled to UVic for a day of rigorous debate and invigorating judging. We emerged victorious. Combined, our senior and junior teams swept the boards: Yasmeen G and Muhammed K took first Senior Team, with Alex D and Merle M coming up behind them and earning second place. Alex, in fact, won best individual speaker at the senior level, a fantastic accomplishment! Carrying on the trend, David M grabbed third individual speaker for seniors, but Brentwood’s reign didn’t stop there – the juniors also placed incredibly well. Jaylynn B won best junior speaker, and she and her partner, Liam M, placed first in the junior category, while Liam P and Larissa G nabbed third. We owe a thank you to our unrivaled coaches, Ms. Steele-MacInnis, Mr. Bryant and Mr. Skardal, who took time out of their busy Brentwood days to accompany us to Victoria! Thanks to everyone’s hard-work, it seems this season will be yet another fabulous year for Brentwood’s debate program. Congratulations to all of Brentwood’s wonderful debaters! Romy G, Allard ‘17
