Our Newest Brentonians

This term Brentwood has had the privilege of welcoming four new students. Arriving just five weeks ago, right after Christmas vacation, it is impressive how seamlessly they have blended into the Brentwood community. Brentwood life is anything but simple, with every student and staff juggling busy schedules. Memorizing sign-in times and the formula to passing a Number 1 Inspection are challenging tasks, especially when all those around you have already mastered it. Here is note of recognition to Caroline S, Mariel F, Sebastian R and Ethan S for handling the adjustment so gracefully!

Why come to Brentwood, especially so late in the school year? Well, each student has a different reason, but for the most of us, it is for the chance to experience the enriching and well-rounded lifestyle that Brentwood offers.

Mariel F, ‘14 said that she “loved the idea of having classes end earlier, allowing more time for co-curricular activities. It seemed like there was a large focus on having well-rounded students who excel in more than just academics. I was excited about the possibility of learning to debate and row.” Other Brentwood students, whether well established or newly introduced, can agree with Mariel that the school gives all of us a special opportunity to learn new things, both in and out of the classroom. That was one of the biggest reasons that I wanted to attend the school.

Caroline S, also from Seattle (but originally from Shanghai) puts what all Brentwood students feel into words: “the academic, arts, and sports programs are all awesome. The school actually wants you to pick what you would like to learn.”

Sebastian R is a student who has come all the way from Germany. He was encouraged by his former Headmaster to branch out and experience school in a new place. Having already developed an affection for Canada’s West Coast, he visited schools in the area and eventually decided that Brentwood was where he wanted to be.

“Even though Canada and the US are close, the cultures are surprisingly different and I am an ‘international student’ which I really like,” said Mariel F. “So far I have really liked Brentwood. The schedule seems like it would not be that busy but I have gone to sleep exhausted every night. The rowing and debate coaches, as well as all my teachers, have been very helpful in terms of getting me caught up. I really like my house and everyone has been so nice and welcoming.”

Each student grows during his or her time at Brentwood. No matter where they are from or what circumstances brought them here, they will not pass through this school unchanged. With a whole community behind them and miles of possibilities ahead of them, all four of our brand new students are quickly becoming true Brentonians!
