Our Time: A Poignant Production 1

On November 25th, our Grade 12 AP Literature class had the pleasure of watching Christina Quintana perform her one-woman play, Our Time, in Mr. Collis’ classroom. Lighting and sound were controlled by technical director Laura McLaren, a Brentwood alumna. Both are part of the acclaimed Vancouver-based theatre company, Delinquent Theatre. Christina, who wrote the play when she was eighteen, plays an anxious girl who feels as if her life is ending during her graduation ceremony. She shares her lifestory through vivid flashbacks, recalling the events that have led to her present gloom. The subject matter is especially potent for us graduating Grade 12s; the girl struggles to find a passion that will guide her decisions post-graduation, and just when she thinks she has found a path that she will enjoy, it is vetoed by her parents. Her only friend in high school is an equally awkward and directionless boy named Jeremy, with whom she has a tradition of buying lottery tickets and eating Chinese food on Sundays. The bittersweet tale of their exploits is poignantly told, and Christina’s emotive performance was memorable. Liam, B, Ellis ‘16
