Ready, Set, Rugby

This past Sunday the rugby girls got up bright and early for a game against the Rainier Highlanders. Despite having come all the way from Washington State, these girls were all in great spirits. The main purpose of this game was to give new players a chance to play; this was the very first game for some. We didn’t know what to expect from the Rainier girls, but after the first few minutes we realized we were playing some pretty serious competition. They came on strong, but we came on stronger. We had some beautiful tries scored by Denise R, Alex ’17 & Shannyn O, Allard ’15. On defense we had some terrific tackles on our side. Playing for the first time, Nessa CB, Allard ’16 was a like a raging bull and Faryn B, Hope ’15 made a quick, swift tackle after chasing a Rainier girl halfway across the field. The Rainier girls held up their end, but in the end Brentwood won 20-15. After the game, some of the novices played another short, casual game. This was a fantastic opportunity for the less experienced players; we were able to practice and execute our skills in a game situation for the first time. The attitude and sportsmanship from each team was great. After all the hard work, we were rewarded with the best medal of all, brunch. From rivals on the field to friends at the dining table, we all got to know each other while stuffing our faces with waffles and whipped cream. The meal ended with the Rainier Girls presenting Anita A, Alex ’15 with the “Babe of Brawl” ball, for putting the most heart into the game. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Felix, Mr. Grisdale, and Mr. Cowie for coming out on a Sunday morning and for organizing this game. Another big thank you goes out to the the Rainier players, coaches, and parents who made this all happen; coming here was a big task. After a very successful 7s season, this was a great kick off to our busy 15s season to come. Our next game is this afternoon at 4:00 on Gillespie; we’re coming for you Cowichan. Linnea M, Allard ‘17
