Resilience On the Hardwood: A Look Back at the Senior Boys 3A Provincials

The Brentwood Senior Boys’ Basketball team recently concluded a physically and emotionally demanding 3A Provincial campaign: over four games, the squad demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt, showcasing both the highs of tactical execution and the sting of narrow margins.

The tournament began with a challenging matchup against Byrne Creek. The narrative of the game was centered on containing a single powerhouse player who disrupted our rhythm early on. As Kang C, Whittall ‘26 noted, “We knew we had to weather their early scoring runs and stay composed as a unit.”

Eventually, the team successfully neutralized his impact through disciplined defensive rotations. This adjustment allowed us to find our flow and cruise to a 20-point victory.

The momentum shifted against the second-seeded LA Matheson. The pre-game scouting report emphasized winning the rebounding battle, an area where we struggled during the first half. Reflecting on the physical toll, Tiger L, Privett ‘28 remarked, “In that first half, we were getting outworked on the glass, and we knew we had to find another gear to stay in the game.” 

After trailing at the break, the team returned with a renewed focus on the boards. We managed to claw back to within five points entering the fourth quarter. Despite our best efforts to complete the comeback, we came up just short, eventually losing by four points.

We had to quickly process the devastation of the Matheson loss to prepare for the number three-ranked MEI. Both of us started off with some sloppy play, but the pace soon picked up. We led by three in the final seconds of the game, but MEI launched a 3-pointer that found its way into the hoop, forcing overtime.

Rather than collapsing, we relied on our defensive identity in the extra period. “Going into overtime, we just told ourselves to lock in on every possession,” said Tee T, Rogers ‘27. This defensive stand secured a narrow six-point win.

The final game for fifth place pitted us against a tall and physical Argyle. The game remained tight throughout, but Brentwood’s intensity created crucial steals. Led by the Grade 12s, the team hung on in the closing moments. Notably, Jaxen L, Ellis ‘26, fresh off his Cinderella performance as Prince Charming, hit several clutch shots and secured the one-point win with last-second free throws. 

This tournament marked an incredibly emotional conclusion, particularly for the 12s. Their leadership was the heartbeat of the squad, and they will be dearly missed. Jaxen’s standout performance earned him a spot on the Second Team All-Star selection, leaving a legacy of resilience that defined this senior class of 2026.
