Riding & Rocking
If the most extreme sport at Brentwood is not ice hockey, then what is it? Most talk about the rugby team, how there is always a teammate who breaks a leg or an arm. There are, however, more extreme sports out there. The Outdoor Pursuits climbers, for instance, go most Thursdays to The Boulders Climbing gym for their weekly high. Before the climbers can ascend the walls, they have to go through their warm up: a 6 km bike ride from school to the Mill Bay ferry, then after a 25 minute ferry journey, 3 more km, all uphill, to the gym. Then they get to hangout under ledges, go bouldering, and rise up the 18 meter wall. Not everyone can climb at once though; when wall climbing, the climber must put their lifeline into the hands of a fellow student. Thus, these cragsmen must have complete trust in their peers. Mrs. Olszewski, Mr. Norman, and occasionally Mr. Wardrop aid the climbers in this form of self-torture. Their skills are sharpened, and added to, helping them to reach new heights as these spiders are preparing for an outdoor climb, which is coming in a few weeks. After their weekly training session, the young mountaineers hit the saddle again and speed down the 3 km to the ferry and then back to school, longing for the next Thursday, when they do it all again.
