Rome, As the Saying Goes, Was Not Built in a Day

When Rhea Silvia birthed her famous twins Romulus and Remus, no one was expecting much from them in their Grade 9 season: after all, those kids at Tiber Secondary had been playing club ball together for years. But the wolf is patient, and is does not take augury to know the difference between this year’s team, one returning player — the incomparable captain Alejandro GG, feared by the Greeks, but loved by their women — and next year’s squad: potentially twelve returning players, including noble centurions Bruno C (Brazil!), Daniel M (Germany!), Enrique C (Mexico!) and Casper P (Canada: oh well). Grifin FR will take the reins from Alejandro next September, and he plans to make Field 6 synonymous with Palatine Hill. He has also promised not to abduct any neighbouring Sabine women. And that, my friends, is about all the Wikipedia entry on Romulus & Remus has to tell us about this year’s junior boys soccer season. But next year, let the divine she-wolf suckle all who seek her out. Mr. Paul Collis, Coach “What a season!” as Bruno C would say. The Junior Boys Soccer team was a very young team this year with twelve Grade 9s and one Grade 8 in it, and most of our team consisted of new students. This made it hard for us to find chemistry as a team at the beginning of the season; however, as the games passed, we improved and learned to enjoy our time as a team. Our season started off with the wrong foot, losing our first game 4-0, but who would think of that when we beat GNS 9-2 in our second game! During ISAs, we played well, but were unlucky to be a couple of goals short of winning our pool. For the rest of the season we had our ups and downs, but our games were always amusing with Andrew W’s ‘bazooka’ shots and Rafa G’s majestic slide tackles. Some of our season’s highlights were our wins over GNS (9-2), Stratford Hall (3-1), and Shawnigan B (8-0). No one will ever forget Xander A’s glorious 360 goal, or Nick P’s celebrations. Regardless of the result of this year’s season, the future is bright for all our returning players who will have a great season next year. Alejandro G, Ellis ’17, Captain
