Just like the waters of Mill Bay are teeming with seals, the Brentwood campus is also teeming with a sea of volentolds. At Regatta, each and every Brentwood student is given a job for the weekend to ensure that things run as smoothly as the boats on the water. This grand list of jobs includes things like Dock Marshall (standing on the dock and making sure there aren’t too many people/boats on the dock at once), Finish and Start lines (catching boats after the race, and directing boats to where they need to be), House Security (make sure that no strangers enter the house), Announcing (calling the races, and playing music to excite the campus and race watchers), Boat driving, Recycling, Boat Holding, Boat Driving, Parking, and more! Students such as Lauren H, Allard ’15, spend their servitude in their residence as house security representatives, protecting their respective houses and maintaining small pockets of peace on campus to combat the ever-bubbly business. The ever-charming Andrew Will, Whittall ’17 will be taking shifts at the information booth, guiding and helping visiting rowers and parents with anything and everything. In the weeks leading up to Regatta, many students opted to give up their Sundays to take a boat-driving course to get their licenses. Now they can follow each thrilling race up close with an official, while everyone back on shore struggles to make out which boat they are cheering for. Although the bedraggled and drenched Grade 8s and 9s who have been subjected to boat holding for the majority of this first afternoon will tell you a much different and wetter story, Regatta is a fun experience for all, even the volentolds, as, although the rain may at times dampen our spirits, being involved in such a colossally fun and successful event is never a dull experience.
