Brian Hannis, a well known potter, came to present a tutorial during our Wednesday class last week. Mr. Hannis demonstrated and explained to us the innovation behind his many simple, yet thoughtful, inventions to enhance this ancient art form. The class sat mesmerized and inspired by the skill demonstrated in his work. He threw several pots in front of us both off of the hump and off of bat.  When he was finished, a groan and a cringe popped from the entire class as he proceeded to cut these pots in two to show us their evenness. He encouraged us to do this as well so we can track our improvement. As he was about to cut a beautiful large bowl in two, even our teacher, Ms. Elmes, protested, it seemed like such a waste.  It was a pleasure to have Mr. Hannis in our class for the day and we students definitely left the room with a different view of pottery and immense respect for Mr. Hannis’ abilities.  Scott W, Pottery Captain, Ellis ‘15
