The Senior Girls Basketball team set out at the start of the season with a goal to advance to the Island Championships. Two weekends ago we travelled to Pacific Christian to participate in the South Island tournament, a qualifier for Islands. We played our first game on Feb 20 against SMUS. The team lost to this traditionally strong team by 9 points. The double-knockout tournament format meant that our subsequent game against Edward Milne was a must win. With Mr. Patel in attendance, the senior girls emerged victorious. This put the team in the situation where we needed to beat Shawnigan in order to qualify for the Islands. In three previous games against Shawnigan, we had yet to win. The girls did not let this record get to them. We, instead, focused on the game and brought our best effort leading wire-to-wire for a 61-54 victory. Later in the evening, we played Parklands for third place in the South Island Championships. Our early success did not alter the mentality of the team; it made us more on task. As Mr. Patel had reminded us, effort is more important than the scoreboard. In this game, nonetheless, our senior girls conquered both and placed third at South Islands with a 55-49 win. Mark Isfeld hosted the Islands the following weekend and we travelled north to compete in the event. With three of the eight teams competing having been ranked in the top 10 provincially throughout the course of the season, the competition was fierce. In the opener, we lost to the highly ranked home team and then ended the season with a close battle against NDSS. Albeit disappointed to end the season on a loss, we were delighted with the overall growth of the team and the great season. Jessica L, Captain
