Senior Hockey Splits Opening Weekend

As the new team set out onto the Brentwood fields for our first tournament of the season, the coaches and players were ecstatic to see where these four games would take us. Our first game, set for noon on Friday, was against Glenlyon Norfolk School. As a known opponent in Brentwood history, GNS is skilled in field hockey; however, with our experienced team we managed to overcome the 1-1 tie in the first half and finish with a 5-1 win. Our second game that day was against another very strong island team from Victoria, St. Michael’s University School. We were prepared to head onto the field with grit as we faced this tough team. After a grueling 55 minutes of scoreless play, Brentwood was awarded a penalty stroke when a St. Michael’s defender stopped a sure goal illegally. We put our center mid, Carla E, Allard ’17 to the test and she scored the winning goal. Brentwood was thrilled with our 1-0 win against SMUS. We rested that night, preparing mentally and physically for our toughest two games of the tournament on Saturday. Our first Saturday game was against provincially ranked Collingwood. Our new team quickly learned that these girls were aggressive, agile and anxious to get goals. After a well-fought game, the final score was 2-0 for Collingwood; however, our coaches and teammates were proud of our ability to communicate and send the ball wide out of the goal area. Quickly after our battle, our tired but strong-minded squad was split into two teams for our final game. The 1st XI was to face the talented Cowichan Secondary School and the 2nd XI was to meet GNS. The 2nd XI played a woman short and through pure hard work and determination, managed to hold GNS to only one goal. To prepare for their game against Cowichan, the 1st XI discussed tactics. Throughout the match, the effort was present even though we only had one sub and our entire team was exhausted and suffering from sore muscles. Cowichan ended up scoring two goals. Again, the team’s feedback was very positive and our goalie, Andrea A, Alex ‘15 and our defensive line made some amazing plays to keep the Cowichan players out of our defensive circle. The tournament was a great way to bond our Senior Girls as well as to see what we are capable of. The team has an amazing attitude and incredible talent.
