September ’26 Sports Update

21 September 2026Neil Robinson - Director of Athletics

The Athletics Program is off to a wonderful start, and the energy level around our amazing facilities and environment is high. Students have already taken to the climbing wall, rowing shells, kayaks, ice rink, basketball, tennis & squash courts, yoga & dance studios, jiu-jitsu mats, weight room, the soccer, rugby, and field hockey pitches, as well as the local cross-country trails. The opportunities for a rigorous, invigorating experience can be found on every corner of our campus.

A pillar of the Athletics Program at Brentwood is the emphasis on team sports. The immersive and collaborative nature of team sports fosters lifelong relationships as well as responsibility and accountability to others. Our incredibly hard-working and determined coaches pride themselves on bringing groups of motivated teens together to improve throughout the year. In the first term, our primary focus is on several teams that are driven for success in their competitive season:

Junior Girls Field Hockey
Senior Girls Field Hockey
Junior Boys Soccer
Senior Boys Soccer
Junior Girls Volleyball
Senior Girls Volleyball
Grade 9 Boys Rugby
Cross-Country Running

Some of our competitive teams will be diving headfirst into intense matches early in the first term. Our Senior Girls Volleyball team headed to the University of British Columbia for the Mizuno Cup last Friday and Saturday, while both squads of field hockey players competed in the Friendship Cup in the Cowichan Valley those same days. Not far behind, Grade 9 Boys Rugby has a series of games and jamborees on the Island, as well as the mainland, and several Junior Girls Volleyball squads will be in action across the Island soon, too. A new addition to the program this year: our climbing instructors will have some of our top athletes in a competition in Victoria in a couple of weeks. Not surprisingly, the Boys Soccer Program is in full flight with the Independent Schools Association tournaments and league play to contend with.

A highlight on campus for those who are up early is the incredible opportunity to witness a sunrise across the shimmering Saanich Inlet, only to be broken by swift rowing shells knifing through the mirror-like water. Some of those determined athletes will make their way to Boston at the beginning of October for the annual Head of the Charles Regatta.

For students not driven to competition, but exploring new sports for the first time or simply enjoying an activity they are passionate about, there is a level for every ability at Brentwood. If you stroll through the fields and the gymnasium on a sports afternoon, you will most certainly hear laughter, joy, and perseverance ringing loudly as students develop new skills with a ball, a racquet, a stick, or a carabiner.

As we always do, Brentwood will be hosting some great events in the near future, so be sure to add the Junior Boys Soccer ISAs (Oct. 2 & 3) as well as the Senior Girls Volleyball Brentwood Invitational (Oct. 16 & 17) to your calendar.

Walking around campus during an athletics afternoon and spending time with our athletes is an amazing adventure. The months ahead promise countless exhilarating moments!
