Photos by Brenda B On Saturday December 7th, 2013, Brentwood was alight with the holiday spirit during the most anticipated night of the year. The clocks read 6:00pm and the long-awaited moment of girls wobbling downstairs on their heels, and boys greeting their dates in their houses, had arrived. It is the night in which girls become young women, and boys, young men. It is a night in which the opportunity arises to tie Brentwood’s seniors and juniors together, in a fun-filled, unforgettable evening. Snowball 2013. This elegant and sophisticated evening is hosted by Grad 2014, and is a Brentwood tradition initiated by Faculty Emeritas, Mrs. Beth Meluish, in which junior boys and girls alike (starting on the first day in September) ask a senior to be their date for the night. It’s a truly festive occasion that puts everyone in the Christmas spirit and allows us time out of our busy first term to reflect on the special company of our friends and Brentwood family. The ceiling of Crook Hall is turned into a winter sky with snowflake decorations; the tables are charmingly placed together and garnished with flowers and flickering candles; the main Christmas tree is standing tall and illuminating the room. Crooks Hall is turned into a magical winter wonderland. Students, dressed in beautiful dresses and suits, settle into their seats, and start excited conversations over how beautiful the dining hall looks, and the exquisite meal they are about to enjoy. Smiles light the room while parent volunteers (at least two professional photographers) capture the memorable moments. Students line up for food served by volunteer parents and family then bustle back to their tables for more exciting conversation. The atmosphere of the evening is something truly unforgettable, something that brings the Brentwood community together to enjoy and appreciate this festive season, but most importantly to savour the company of our peers. Seeing new faces, and talking to people you may not usually get the chance to talk to through the busy school routine is something particularly special about this occasion. At 7:30 dinnertime discussions begin to wrap up and we make our way to the McNeil Center. Brentwood’s very own DJs welcome students with enthusiasm and pumping music. Heels are ditched at the doors and the party starts. A variety of fast and slow songs play, as the night is lightheartedly danced away. Sunday is spent telling stories of the magnificent evening everyone enjoyed. Dates thank each other again for the amazing time they had. But the tales are not shared solely the next day, but rather they are something people talk about for a long time after, sharing funny stories and reminiscing on the fond memories of the night. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this unforgettable evening including the Food Service Staff, Mrs. Martin, our DJ’s Josh S, Evan S, Max D & Lane H, Grad President Sean J and Grad council 2014, and the many parent volunteers.
