SPARC SOUP

Members of SPARC have spent their Sunday afternoons over the past two months making soup and applesauce for children who attend Khowhemun School. As the weekly delivery is usually done on Monday mornings by a volunteer from Thrifty Foods, our student cooks had not yet met their student.

After an evening of picking apples from Mr. and Mrs. Burrow’s home and several nights of baking and decorating over 90 gingerbread men, we arranged for an afternoon of visiting the primary students at the school.

When we arrived, their cries of ‘Here comes the soup makers’ rang through the school. Some were so eager to have a gingerbread man that they literally shook like a twiggy tree in a strong wind while their cheeks grew red as they waited. Others carefully licked their cookies and some children gingerly placed it by their desk as they worked, glancing over intermittently to check that it was still there (or perhaps admiring the handiwork of the decorators!).

The children were coaxed to use the Khowitsun word for ‘thank you’ and we learned to say N’um I kwa – ‘You’re welcome’. We all left the experience with our hearts a little warmer. It will be nice to have a vision of those eager, appreciative faces while making our next batch of soup.
