Staff vs. Students: The Final Kick Off for Senior Soccer Girls

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon in June, in the heat of the day, we kicked off our final game of the season against the very skilled staff team during the annual Staff-Student soccer game. We warmed up with smiles on our faces but were covertly planning how to defeat the staff, as we knew they would also be thinking of domination. Right from the first kick of the game, both laughter and entertaining banter could be heard! With Mr. Collis being a very strong striker with poetic moves, the staff were able to quickly score making it 1-0. We didn’t back down though because we knew there was still a lot of time left in the game and many of us wanted to score on Ms. Fougner, our coach. Sadly, Mr. Collis speedily maneuvered his way through our defense again and rocketed a shot into the back of our net. We were still working hard though and finally, right before halftime, Bryn C, Mack ‘16 shot high, just under the bar: Ms. Fougner never had a chance. The score was 2-1 and there was still another half to go! Switching ends, we had the sun in our eyes but we were not going to let that stop us! As the half continued, there was more and more banter, under-the-radar penalties, and, of course, a lot of laughter. Mr. Robinson, who strongly worked past our defense, scored the staff’s third goal. Then it became a bit of a blur; everyone was working the ball up and down the field and enjoying the game immensely. With a penalty from the staff, Lauren H, Allard ’15 shot and scored a penalty kick making the score 4-2. The last goal of the game went to Mr. Collis as his hurtled a ball straight as Mitali P’s head. By the time the final whistle blew, everyone was hot, tired and laughing. Both Ms. Cheung and Mr. Robinson’s act of ganging up and dumping water on my head summarizes all of the jokes that occurred within the game. Everyone left the field with a smile and a fond memory despite the 5-2 win for the staff. I speak on behalf of the Grade 12s when I say there could not have been a better way to spend our last sports practice at Brentwood than this fun tradition. I would also like to thank all the staff who came out to play and Mr. Felix for being a superb referee. Finally, I would like to add what a great pleasure it was to be able to play against Mr. Garvey in his final staff-student game.
